The roadside wildflowers are stunning this time of year.

Donna's ditch, planted with wildflowers and native species.

They even grew up around our sign :)

Catnip in full bloom

Shop walkway, all tidied and ready for sample Sunday!

Two kittens got adopted, one still needs a home!

Birds are the big news of the day. 21 baby birds, to be exact. Grackles, robins, warblers, etc. Our friend Jenni, wildlife rehabber, had to go out of town, and she entrusted her wee babies in Maggie's care. Here they are in the classroom.

They have to be fed every hour or so during daylight hours, so they travel where I travel. This is the sight that greets me when I open the robin cage :)

Monk's hidey spot in the prairie plants.

I took my gathering basket out to get catnip to distill...and found a giant 5 ft plant that wouldn't even begin to fit in the basket!

Dante says he didn't inhale.

I really love my still.

Our kittens are spayed, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready for adoption!! Here our little torti tests the yarn for softness (it passed the test).

Lunch!! We love lunch. This is a fresh corn tortilla topped with adobo spiced black beans, queso fresco, a fried egg, and homemade chipotle/roasted garlic salsa with fried plantain slices on the side. I don't know what this is called - I think I had it at a restaurant some years ago. If anyone knows the name of the dish, please let me know!

It was WAY yummy.

The gardens are going bonkers, in the best way possible. Our first zucchini! (you really only get excited about the first one, right?) I pulled some weeds, and staked up the tomatoes (about a week too late).

Donna did tons of mowing today... Tons and tons. It is a never-ending job.....

Today began with some kitty lovin's. These are barn babies, caught last week, along with their feral momma. Momma got spayed and is safely back in her barn, happy and healthy. Now we are making the kittens friendly; they'll be spayed/neutered, and adopted out.

Donna's rose garden by the house looks spectacular!

And the lavender is starting to bloom already! A bit early this year. It never grows very well for us, but we have a few nice bushes that overwintered well.

Here's a photo of one of Maggie's lasagna beds, in the early phases. I take big cardboard boxes (of which we get many!) and flatten them, and lay them in thick layers on the ground. On top, we pile all kinds of organic matter: old hay, weeds, compost, trimmings, horse manure, leaves, bedding from Maggie's rabbit's litterbox. I usually am working on the beds to be planted next year, but you can also plant directly into it the first year. The soil quality is wonderful, no tilling is involved, and weeds are minimal.

Here's another project in the works: mulching around all our fruit trees (three peach, one plum, two pears and two apples) and planting perennial herbs and flowers around the bases. This will provide extra food for our bees, and make orchard mowing and maintenance much easier.

This is Beatrice, our first bee hive! She is doing well... Currently the Beatrices are enjoying the roses, lavender, and alexander. We installed two new hives on local farms a few days ago. Catherine is at Picket Fence Creamery, and Diana is at Raccoon Forks Farm in Redfield.

And last but certainly not least, we had a major Barn Cleaning Event today! Removing junk, sorting, and reorganizing. A very dirty dusty job (achoo!) but it's more spacious and clean now!

Colby, Jack and Ohio are all gorgeous 14 week old male kittens. They've been in fostercare since they were about 4 weeks old, and are an utter delight! They come from a family of six boys. Their three siblings have already gone to wonderful homes and have settled in beautifully, now these handsome boys await their turn! Colby and Jack (also known as "the cheese boys") are especially attached to each other. While they enjoy the company of all the cats (and the bunny!) in the household, they almost always choose to cuddle together for sleep, and bathe each other often! Ohio is especially attached to people and loves to pretend he is a scarf (he enjoys laying on necks and sitting on shoulders). They are all wonderful, perfectly behaved, loving kittens looking for a great home. They also have LOUD loving purrs! Their adoption fee is $65, and they are neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. If you are at all interested in adopting one of these wonderful boys, please let us know!

We have kittens for adoption! One was found at my sister's work - we raised her from a 3 week old, so she is a bottle-baby. The other 4 were found in a Mustang car (currently non-running)on the farm. Their feral momma thought that was a great place to raise a family, apparently. So now Shelby, Bullitt (aka. Steve McQueen), Elanor, Dash and Sally are looking for homes! They are about 8 weeks old, living indoors, socialized to other cats and dogs, and litterbox trained. If you're interested in adopting one (or more) just let us know!

We have kittens. We always try NOT to have kittens - all of our friendly farmcats are of course spayed and neutered. However, it's a farm, and having a feral cat or two in the barn is unfortunately a common occurrence. We have a feral tabby that had 2 kittens, which we caught and tamed. And, 2 slightly older kittens were dumped on the road outside our house. So, we have 4 kittens in need of homes. Above, is Princess Miranda. a VERY long-haired torti - she will need to go to a home where someone will be wiling to brush her and help care for her long glorious coat! She was one of the feral kittens that were dumped on our road. She is now super-loving, athletic, and very playful!
This is little stripey (not yet named). She is a talker - BOY is she a talker! Quite cuddly, she is one of the younger ones that was born in our barn. She has a sister, and all-black kitten we call Burdock, because she sticks to you like glue. She declined to be photographed for this blog -she was too busy sitting on the photographer's shoulder. She really will sit on your shoulder for hours if you let her, even if you're wandering around the house doing dishes or putting the laundry away, etc.

And this little beauty is a beautiful grey tabico (mostly tabby, with a few bits of calico marking). She's very loving and the most playful of the bunch!! She was one of the feral ones found by the road.

They have all been wormed and treated for fleas. We are hoping to get them spayed through the local animal protection agency, for very low cost. If you are interested in a kitten, please do let us know, as these are up for adoption to good homes!
